Washington Fingerprinting

(July 27, 2024)

This page explains the fingerprinting and background check process required for certain professional licenses in Washington State.

Who Needs Fingerprints and Background Checks?
  1. Not all professions require fingerprints and background checks. If yours does, you'll find information about it on the program that licenses your profession.
Washington Residents

If you live in Washington, you can submit your fingerprints electronically through IdentoGO at IdentoGO Washington Portal. Here's a summary of the process:

  1. Schedule and pay for your appointment online.
  2. Visit a Washington fingerprinting location and have your fingerprints scanned.
  3. The fingerprints are electronically sent to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).
  4. WSP will conduct a background check and send the results to the Department of Licensing.
Out-of-State Residents

If you live outside of Washington, you cannot submit fingerprints electronically. You will need to:

  1. Visit a local law enforcement agency or private fingerprint company.
  2. Have your fingerprints taken on a fingerprint card.
  3. Ensure the Originating Agency Identifier (ORI) number for your profession is written on the card.
  4. Mail the completed card to IdentoGO.
  5. Follow IdentoGO's online instructions to complete the background check process.
Fingerprint and Background Check Fees
  1. The cost of fingerprinting and background checks varies depending on your profession and whether a national background check is required. See the text for a breakdown of fees.
Background Checks with a Conviction
  1. If your background check reveals a conviction, the Department of Licensing will review your case individually. They will consider the nature of the crime, how long ago it occurred, and its relevance to your profession.
